On Monday 16th January, millions of Americans honoured the civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, by answering one of his most important questions “What are you doing for others?”  The MLK Day of Service is a national event where Americans come together on the national holiday to serve their neighbours and communities.  Volunteers take part in various community projects, often cleaning up their local neighbourhoods by collecting litter, cleaning graffiti and tidying up unkempt areas.  President Obama, the First Lady, and their daughter Malia Obama volunteered at a local elementary school as part of the Day of Service, helping to clean, paint and organize the school’s library.  Dr. King, who devoted his life to helping others, once said that “everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”
